Daylilies are considered the perfect perennial because they are so easy to grow.  They can live practically anywhere and don't need much care.  Daylily (genus Hemerorallis) will bloom for a number of weeks with each blossom lasting only one day.  Daylilies range in size, shape, and color, with more than 35,000 varieties available.  They are native to the Orient and have been used as garden plants, food or medicine for over 4,000 years.

Daylilies grow and bloom best in full sun, however can tolerate some shade.  At least 6-7 hours of daily sunlight is recommended.  They do best away from trees and shrubs.  They should have good drainage and good organic matter to retain moisture.  Daylilies are drought tolerant, but should be supplied with water weekly to maintain hardiness.  Mulching is recommended to hold in moisture and keep weeds under control.  A light fertilizer should be used in the spring when first growth appears and again after blooming ends, to promote growth and blooming for the next year.  Once the bloom has faded cut the bloom stalk off to maintain an attractive and healthy Daylily.

Some Daylilies will go dormant in the winter and the leaves die back completely.  In the spring, spear-like plants emerge to reveal another new and beautiful growing season.
